How it works

L-tryptophan is an essential amino acid and the primary precursor to serotonin and melatonin. Clinical evidence supports its use for reducing sleep latency and improving sleep maintenance, while its effects on mood and anxiety are positive but less definitive than pharmaceutical interventions.

It crosses the blood-brain barrier via large neutral amino acid transporters and is converted into 5-HTP, which then synthesizes into serotonin and subsequently melatonin.

Safety

  • Risk of serotonin syndrome if combined with SSRIs, MAOIs, or other serotonergic drugs.
  • May cause morning grogginess or vivid dreams.
  • Historical association with Eosinophilia-Myalgia Syndrome (EMS) was linked to manufacturing contaminants, not the amino acid itself.
